Teaching Children to Read Begins with Phonetics

My daughter read by age 5 and now my 4 year old son is learning to spell and sound out words.  They have known their alphabet sounds since they were about 18 months.  That maybe a bit young for some.  But, I was always drawn to educational toys.

We played alot with alphabet and numbers toys.  I read to them alot and they became engaged with books and language.

The first step is that learn their alphabet sounds.  Then they liked to look at books and began to understand that the letters on the page form words.

Before I tried to have them read from a page.  I had them spell out loud.  A child can sound out single syllable words such as c-a-t.  Then they begin to make the connection between sounding out words on the page.
